In 1992 the European Commission drafted directives and regulations to to prevent further destruction of European heritage. The resulting document, the Treaty of Malta or Valetta Convention is binding on all members of the European Union that signed and ratified this treaty. Germany is one of the last countries to sign (in 2003, even later than Moldavia or Monaco!). The Treaty of Malta provides all parties with clear guidelines and rules on how to deal with endangered heritage and how to protect it for future generations.
